Tamil film Visaranai has been selected as the official entry by India to Oscars 2017 in the Foreign Language Film category.
The film directed by Vetrimaran had bagged three National Film awards previously. The film is based on Chandrakumar’s novel Lock Up, which is based on true incidents when Chandrakumar was locked up with his friends in a cell for 13 days. Chandrakumar himself has gone through a lot of struggle from being an autorickshaw driver to an author.
The film is set in Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, where four people from Tamil Nadu go to work as labourers. They are arrested and wrongly accused in a case of theft that the police is attempting to solve quickly. The film portrays the police brutality that follows and the vulnerability of the migrant workers who feel handicapped without the knowledge of the local language.
The 89th Academy Awards event is scheduled for in February 2017 in Los Angeles.
We hope, the entry from India is shortlisted for the category.
